Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
I had this one on my list for a while but never much motivation to watch it. Any time I’ve looked up “top horror films” online it’s always mentioned with rave reviews. So last night around midnight I figured I’d check it out.
Man, what a genuinely horrifying and fantastically executed film. I think part of my hesitation in watching it was that I just didn’t see how it could be scary. The concept of aliens taking over (or duplicating in this instance) our bodies is extreme, yet the way the story unfolds, it becomes more and more real and therefore more terrifying.
In fact, a good portion of the premise involves our heroes having difficulty getting others to believe in such a concept. And the very character meant to be the “voice of reason” and grounded in reality (Leonard Nimoy - a great surprise for me, I had no idea he was in it) turns out to be the complete contrary.
Donald Sutherland is fantastic and his final scene will haunt you. Also Jeff Goldblum made me miss the days when there were more movies…with Jeff Goldblum.
